Silver War Nickel (1942-1945)
Description
1945-D Jefferson War Nickel struck at the Denver Mint as part of the 1942-1945 wartime silver alloy series (56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese). The large D mintmark sits above Monticello on the reverse, the placement mandated to distinguish the silver wartime composition from standard cupro-nickel coinage. The obverse displays Jefferson's portrait with 'LIBERTY' and the date; the reverse shows Monticello with 'FIVE CENTS' and 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'. A circulated example with gray-silver toning typical of the manganese-silver alloy.
