Silver War Nickel (1942-1945)
Description
1944-P Jefferson War Nickel struck at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the 1942-1945 wartime silver alloy series (56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese). The large P mintmark sits above Monticello on the reverse, the placement mandated to flag the silver composition and the first time a P mintmark appeared on United States coinage. The obverse displays Jefferson's portrait with 'LIBERTY' and the date; the reverse shows Monticello with 'FIVE CENTS' and 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'. A circulated example with gray-silver toning typical of the manganese-silver alloy.
