1943 S Wheat Cent - Steel
$5.00
Category: Coins
Description
1943-S Lincoln Wheat Cent struck at the San Francisco Mint in zinc-coated steel, the one-year-only wartime composition adopted in 1943 to conserve copper for the war effort. The S mintmark sits below the date on the obverse, beneath Victor D. Brenner's Lincoln portrait with 'LIBERTY' and 'IN GOD WE TRUST'; the reverse carries the classic two wheat-stalk design. Steel cents are ferromagnetic, a quick check that distinguishes them from the rare 1943 copper errors. A circulated example with surfaces typical of the steel series.
