Silver War Nickel (1942-1945)
Description
1943-P Jefferson War Nickel, struck at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the 1942-1945 wartime alloy series (35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese). The obverse displays Jefferson's portrait with 'LIBERTY' and date 1943; the reverse shows Monticello with the distinctively large 'P' mintmark positioned above the dome, the placement mandated to distinguish the silver composition from standard cupro-nickel coinage. Business strike with standard satin-to-slightly-grainy surfaces typical of the wartime series. Circulation wear is evident across Jefferson's cheekbone and hair curls as well as on Monticello's roofline and steps.
