Silver War Nickel (1942-1945)
Description
1943-S Jefferson Nickel, struck at the San Francisco Mint as part of the wartime silver alloy series (56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese) issued 1942-1945. The large S mintmark is prominently placed above Monticello on the reverse, the standard placement for all wartime nickels. Obverse displays Jefferson portrait with legible date and legends; reverse shows Monticello with 'FIVE CENTS' and 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' inscriptions. The coin exhibits overall gray-silver toning consistent with the manganese-silver alloy and circulated handling.
